I’m on a crochet binge as of late (I feel like I haven’t knitted in forever, I miss it!) and right now I’m teaching myself some crochet seaming skills. So far it’s been very frustrating. So I’m making a baby blanket that requires me to invisibly seam a whole bunch of squares together, 25 of them to be exact.
Normally I love the mattress stitch, but I’m reminded that it only applies to stockinette stitch. In KNITTING. This is crochet, a whole other beast. I need to invisibly seam (or what they call “invisible weaving” in crochet language) these squares side by side, and top to bottom. I did one seam, and it took me forever. I had to redo it 4-5 times until I figured this was the best I can do. (Notice that one square is slightly larger than the other - beginner gauge is never consistent!)

I’m probably being anal here, but because this is a blanket, I just assumed invisible meant just that, invisible (I like my blankets to be as “reversible” as possible, no wrong or right side). But the back seam you can see a hint of the seaming yarn, and I suppose that’s the most “invisible” it will get. I’m reminded that even with stockinette stitch, there is a wrong and right side to the mattress stitch, so why shouldn’t this be any different. I’ve been using Nancy Wiseman’s The Essential Book of Crochet Techniques, and so far it’s been the most helpful with this. Anybody have any tips for me on this? Because I still have 24 squares to go. I hope I don’t go bald from tearing my hair out in frustration! Blech!

Oh my..this is a beautiful blanket!! Have you thought about crocheting it together? :D sc? :) hehehee. just a suggestion if the “mattress stitch” is driving you nuts. hehehe. i had to do that w/ the wedding afghans. It’s just as frustrating w/ pieces that don’t match, but its kind of easier to fudge. :) hehehehe

The blanket looks great. I often make crocheted blankets. Usually, I don’t crochet squares, I crochet strips that look like squares. Then, I crochet a single crochet border around each strip. It’s much easier to match up the border stitches when putting the strips together.
Maybe next time.

Hi. I think the blanket looks gorgeous. Sorry but I am unable to provide any useful hints on crocheting squares together - I’ve never done it! Good luck with it.
