Ok, so true to my word, I have been teaching myself to crochet. The truth is, I wanted to teach myself almost a year ago, but never had time (too many knitting WIPs taking up my time!). Plus, with the holidays coming up, a million and one baby showers on the way, and other things, I can barely keep up with my own WIPs, much less finish on time all the handmade gifts. Too many things to do, not enough time.
Anyways, my hunny and I went to Arizona this past weekend (additional pictures and details here). I took advantage of the time away from home by packing up my crochet stuff and occupying myself on the flight:
My first crocheted swatch!! I practiced each type of stitch for two rows each. (Can you identify which rows are which?) I used several of Candi Jensen’s books - I really like her diagrams and clear instructions. It made it easy to read and figure out. I’d say that so far it seems really easy! (Right now I’m working on doing circles - a bit more confusing though)

And of course, how could I not pass up the opportunity to visit a yarn store while I’m in Tucson?? I went to Purls (the east location, since it was closest to my hotel). The ladies there were so nice!

Of course, I dragged my hubby along with me, and the store had nice couches and a sitting area - perfect for nonknitters while I shop. He amused himself by taking pictures of me while I was browsing around:

The crochet looks great! I have the same Candi Jensen book. I really liked it. I also took a class which helped as well.

Very cool that you are crocheting! That’s something I wish I had the time to learn. Glad you had fun in Arizona!

I just learned to crochet, too! But, I had to stop. It was KILLING my wrist. So, I’m just going to use it as edging for blankets and such.

Crochet, your brave. I’ve dabbled a bit with crochet and bluffed my way through crochet edgings, but I’d really like to learn properly. I look forward to seeing more of your crochet art.

I’ve dabbled in crochet as well, but have had a little trouble being left-handed. Somehow I’m finding crochet more difficult than learning to knit. I was impressed by your first swatch!
Isn’t Arizona cool? Actually, it’s quite hot, but you know what I mean. The cactus are so neat. I want one for my backyard but it takes, like, 80 years before they can even grow their first “arm”.

Crochet seems like just the thing to take your skills to the next level. I too, want to learn. There are so many cute crochet patterns out there.

As a crocheter, yes I can tell the difference in the stitches! Way to go! I am very impressed. Thanks for the tip about the Candi Jensen books. Since I am an experienced crocheter I don’t remember what was difficult about learning. I’ll remember that tip for Yarntopia (I’ll be the “official” crochet person til amylovie catches up with me).

Congratulations on learning to crochet! I teach beginning crochet, and it’s not as easy as knitting. Looks like you are on your way to many crocheted projects….
