China Pictures, Part 1 (Bejing)
We took a TON of pictures and video clips, and it was really hard to narrow down which ones to post. So here are just some VERY BRIEF snapshots of the highlights (beware, this post is very picture-heavy!)
Welcome to Beijing!
(a Coca-Cola ad in the airport)
Summer Palace:
(Full of palace temples, gardens, lakes, etc; it was a place for royalty to come to escape the Forbidden City’s summer heat)
Empress Dowager Cixi’s marble boat - yes it’s entirely out of marble - made out of funds that were earmarked for a modern navy:
Wayne having some fun:
Forbidden City:
The entrance & moat - we entered from the North end:
No one told me how huge this place was!!
The South end -The Gate of Heavenly Peace- overlooking Tiananmen Square, which is right across the street:
Tiananmen Square:
Many kite-flyers on the Square:
Chairman Mao Mausoleum - on the south end of the Square - his preserved body on display inside (our tour didn’t have enough time for us to go in - darn):
Museum of Chinese History - Eastern side of the Square:
Monument to the People’s Heroes:
Great Wall:
Easily one of the biggest highlights of our trip - we were at the Badaling section of the Wall; we scaled up the left side of the main entrance, which was the steeper side:
The other side of the Wall, teeming with climbing tourists - see how far it goes?
Another view of how far the Wall stretches over the mountains:
How could we NOT resist a cheesy picture on the Wall?!
