Congratulations: Anne & Kenn
Ok, so I’ll admit it. The real reason why were were on the other side of the country was because of my brother-in-law. It was my first time in the south, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Everyone was SO sweet and hospitable and welcoming! I loved how casual and warm everyone was. Although I think I would probably develop either 1) heart disease or 2) diabetes or 3) both, if I regularly ate like how I did when I was there. But it was really good stuff!! I kind of wish we were there a bit longer to do some sightseeing (our schedule was packed due to the wedding). Perhaps next time? In the meantime, I’m back at home with fun pictures, fond memories, and contemplating what the heck a tarheel exactly is.
If you want other perspectives of this trip, visit Fred and Thomas. I don’t think anyone else has blogged about it yet…
(BTW, these pictures are courtesy of Thomas, who took better pictures than we did.)
They made it in the local paper:

According to southern lore, ‘tarheel’ is a reference to British troops under General Cornwallis who had to cross the Tar River, which actually had tar dumped in it to delay their crossing. They thought that anyone who waded through rivers in North Carolina would end up having tar heels.
This is my favorite story.
